There have been a lot of articles in the news lately about product launches for multifunction printers, the newsworthy feature? Cloud technology. Just yesterday, Dell announced that it is equipping all of  up-and-coming multifunction printers and related software with cloud technology to make printing from any device, be it a PC or a cell phone, possible. The simple reason that Dell and other companies like Epson, are equipping their products with this technology: the business community is increasingly using tablets and cell phones to print their documents.

Benefits of cloud printing

It’s hard to believe, with all of the wireless devices used in the workplace, that cloud printing was only developed in 2012. Over the past three years, office equipment technology companies have been incorporating cloud printing capabilities into their printing devices and it has finally become a new standard.

The flexibility that mobile printing allows is at the top of cloud printings benefits. Have you ever been running late and not had the time to log into your computer, find the document, load the document and then print it before a meeting? With mobile printing, you can easily print the document from your home computer or cell phone and it will be waiting for you by the time you reach work. Or if someone in your office needs a document from your files, but you are not there, easily print it for them from your current location.

Other benefits include:

  • reduction in pesky cables

  • a rise in productivity

  • high levels of security

  • elimination of the need for unique print drivers

  • access to any mobile enabled printer, regardless of the brand

How printers have changed

Printers with cloud technology now include either a wireless card or a connection to a wireless router. Registering a device to the printer is now done through a browser rather than a print driver set-up through an IT department. Many print companies have also developed specialized software to compliment the new technology, for example Sharp’s Cloud Portal Office, a cloud-based document management system. And each brand has implemented their own security features to keep documents securely behind firewalls.
