Resisting new technology

Are the printers in your office looking a little outdated? Are your superiors dragging their heels when it comes to upgrading any office equipment? You want to make sure that you are getting everything done, meeting your deadlines and keeping your boss happy, but sometimes it’s not the easiest thing to do when your office printers look like they were built before you were born. Outdated machinery can be a pain- hindering your ability to work quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, the decision to upgrade the office equipment is not yours and as far as your boss is concerned, everything is working smoothly. So how do you approach a boss who is so resistant to change?

Recognize that you can be the solution

First things first: you need to realize that someone has to convince your boss. Or better yet, educate them. You may have a better understanding of the difficulties associated with the outdated technology. You’ll need to explain to your boss the problems that you and your colleagues are experiencing. Both from a monetary and productivity standpoint, your boss will need to understand how investing in new equipment can be beneficialto the business in order to stop resisting new technology.

See from your employer’s eyes

Look at it from your employer’s view; after all it will ultimately be their decision. It’ll take a little bit of research but you’ll need to determine why they are so resistant- is it monetary? A lack of technological knowledge? Maybe they are unaware that the printers are slowing down the office’s productivity.

When you determine their key objections, you’ll be able to address those concerns. Trying to convince your boss is tough, we understand that. There’s only so much you can push, but opening up a dialogue can show your boss that you want to hear their objections and suggestions. After you have prepared what you will address and how you will talk to them, give your boss a heads up. Let your employer know that you want to speak to them regarding upgrading the equipment in the office. Send them a memo or quick message. This will allow them to think the issue through as well.
